and aggravated mayhem after he set another teen on fire o a bus. the da added the enhancement of a hate crime. surveillance video shows thomas using a lighter to set an 18-year-old on fire as he slept in the back of a bus earlier this week. his legs were severely burned in the incident and he's currently listed in stable condition. the mother told the oakland tribune that her son often wore a skirt and identified as gender neutral. we have new details tonight in the case of a two week old baby boy taken from a sunnyvale home. the boy's father is accused of kidnapping him. he is jailed near tucson

awaiting extradition to california. he was arrested last night after crossing into mexico. the newborn baby is said to be in good condition and in the custody of arizona child protective services. the boy's mother says he vanished tuesday night after the couple had a fight over moving out of state. they expect to take a suspect wanted for rape into custody sometime soon. a female student came forward yesterday to report she was sexually assaulted early monday afternoon in a campus restroom and she knew her attacker. she was taken to the hospital, treated, and released. the college police department is calling this an isolated incident. a san jose cop will soon be headed to jail himself. tony pleaded guilty today to

exchanging pornographic pictures with a teenage girl. it happened while he was a detective for the sexual assault investigation unit in 2011. he will be sentenced in february and faces a minimum of six months in jail. the judge will decide if he has to register as a sex offender. a follow-up now on those budget cuts hitting a south bay college. it appears the university has found some extra money. today university president mohammed issued a statement saying the university will restore courses planned for next spring that had been on the chopping block. to get the money, the university plans to redirect one time funds allocated to campus infrastructure and other projects. >> we're making every effort to make sure we offer our students

a full complement of courses. >> the president also added that san jose's budget remains balanced. the university is still trying to determine in some part-time instructors will be able to continue teaching at the university. a lot of excitement in the bay area. the biggest football game of the season around these parts. 51,000 people making their way to the stanford campus. traffic looks a little sluggish, but it's moving just fine. where is everyone going? right here, stanford stadium, where two of the top teams in the country are going to square off. stanford taking on oregon.

this is the biggest party in town, isn't it? >> reporter: it is. take a look. the left-hand lane, you can't even see. it is where you see the main back up. a lot of excitement here. that main back up, that's the lane that gets you into stanf d stanford. the parking lot off site, they're charging 20 bucks to park. they're making a lot of money here at palo alto high school. this is embarcadero road. bumper to bumper for about 20 minutes. that's how long it took us to get to palo alto high school. we saw some fans parking in the neighborhoods and walking. drivers were stuck in traffic for quite a while.

>> this is just how it works. you're in the traffic until you get to the game and then it's great. >> how has the traffic been? >> it's been like this for a long time. >> reporter: he is used to traffic for huge games like against cal, but this one against oregon with national title implications has caused a lot of people to come out. it's busy. there's a huge crowd out here. people we talk with say it's been pretty smooth. we still haven't heard the last of those problem bolts on the new eastern span of the bay bridge. it opened on labor day with some temporary shims in place. the fix has been delayed.

engineers devised sesed saddles. they won't be in place until at least january. phones down, eyes up. beginning today, that's the message riders will hear and see around san francisco. the safety program is meant to remind people to be aware of their surroundings. an increased police presence is already helping reduce crime, but police want riders to do their part. >> you're going to see the ambassadors we have out there. you're going to be engaging in your surroundings. >> the campaign is rolling out in several languages in hopes of reaching every rider. investigators are trying to figure out what sparked a house fire and explosion that injured

a lot of champagne being popped in san francisco tonight. twitter went public today and created a lot of private wealth. it was big. >> very big. twitter soared today, even beyond its own expectations. investors it seems don't just like to tweet. they like to buy as well. it was a fitting open to the twitter ipo. 10-year-old vivian who used the social media site to fight slavery by selling lemonade rang the opening bell. >> it was a mystery to me and it

also sounded somewhat silly. i sat down by my pr people for breakfast one morning. i was told, honey, it's time. please, i don't have time. i'm too busy. maybe i'm too successful. >> now it's twitter that's successful. a blockbuster ipo raising $2 billion for the company and creating a whole new wave of silicon valley wealth. what will the san francisco company do with all that money? step one, hire more people to grow the service. >> i think it's all about now the very long, long-term business we're trying to build. we have an absolute perspective on the long-term company we want to be. the public conversational real-time platform. >> this man, jack dorsey, who is also making news because of a report that his other tech

nbcbayarea.com and search bay area proud. the cooldown started today. let's check in with our chief meteorologist. >> you're looking at satellite radar picture. we have a storm system off to the north. it's continually producing a lit rainfall for the northwest. for us, absolutely dry at the moment. temperatures won't get too cold in the overnight hours. we'll have 49 inland. by the bay, low 50s. 11:00 a.m., staying in the 60s at this point. we have had the haze today. moderate air quality for a good section of the interior valleys and a forecast update to share with you. we have a storm intensity change coming our for that system next week. look at that beautiful picture

across oakland for tonight. friday, i don't think there's going to be any major problems. temperatures slightly below average. 72 in palo alto. mid 70s in the extreme south bay. the east bay ranging from 70 to 77 degrees. 73 in livermore. san francisco 68. sonoma 62. 70 in oakland. an on shore wind will keep that coastline cooler. we have this area of warming moving up through the south. that will fade helping to further cool our temperatures. then we get to the forecasting issue. we talked a lot yesterday about this storm system on the way and how much rain it might produce

for some areas of the bay. at this point, the storm system is still on the way, but now we have this wild card. high pressure is going to start to move in. some of the drier air may force a good section of that rain up into the northwest. will we get some rainfall? i still do think there is a chance of showers in the forecast. it just doesn't look as large. you can see right at about near 70 degrees as we head into the weekend. temperatures drop off as we head into next week. tuesday and wednesday, a slight chance of showers. 15% to about 35% as well. we're still hoping for some rain drops. it's changed so much in the past couple of days we could get into tomorrow's forecast get a look at the latest update and we may

take a look at this video. it's not a bird or a plane or a ufo. it's a meteor that lit up the sky in southern california last night. hundreds of witnesses reported seeing fire in the sky. one witness said it looked like

a fireball. the national weather service says the light show was associated with a meteor shower, which has been especially active in early november. no amount is safe. that's what the fda said today about trans fat. the agency is considering banning the fat that's in microwave popcorn and fried food. it's the worst kind of fat for your heart. it raises bad cholesterol aleho lowers good cholesterol. >> this makes it easier on consumers so that we don't all have to grab our reading glasses and pour over labels. >> it's a big move. the fda has opened the idea up

finally tonight an out of this world experience. this is the sochi winter olympic torch arriving at the international space station. there it is. you can see the crew carrying the torch aboard. it lifted off yesterday. the torch won't be lit in space. there's no oxygen up there any way. for the first time ever, it will take a space walk. what a treat for them! >> that torch will be coming
